Nickelodeon LogoNickelodeon Logo Evolution
Nickelodeon is a cable television network for Children and teens.  The network was started in 1979, and since then the branding has gone through a few changes.  The splash emblem wasn't used until 1984. This variation of the logo was designed by Tom Corey and Scott Nash.  The current logo is a still has the familiar orange color but the splash shape has been removed.  The newer logo is better because the font still has the same friendly appearance but it isn't being crammed into a shape.

DC Comics Logo
DC Comics Old Logos Evolution

In 1934 DC comics was founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.  The current logo was created by a brand consultancy firm called Landor Associates.  DC comics have been around for quite some time. Unfortunately, a consistent logo design has not.  There are so many different variations that brand recognition is lacking.  Out of all the logos I do like the newest the best, simply because it isn't inside a circle. For some reason the circle design reminds me of something that would going on the side of a pair of sneakers. This is probably because one of the logos for Converse is round with a star in the center.

Under Armour Logo

I'm not sure why but when the design came out it took me a while to realize that the logo is actually a U and an A put together. The company itself began in 1996, and provides a wide array of clothing and accessories, usually used for sports. The logo is made of a custom typeface.  The emblem and the font are both nice and work well together, but I'm not sure that such a large emblem should be sitting on top of a much smaller font.  The designer probably could have found a different way to position the font.  Other than this the logo looks very nice.

KFC LogoKFC Logo Evolution History Old

The restaurant Kentucky Fried Chicken was started by Colonial Sanders in 1951.  I am uncertain who designed the logo but it seems it has always had the face of the Colonial in it.  The logo has undergone some changes since the company was started in 1951 but has still remained recognizable.  The logo that is in use now was created in 2007 by a branding agency called Tesser. The font in to logo has changed a few times and the title of the establishment was shorted to KFC so that the word "fried" would no longer be in the logo. I remember being surprised when the logo was changed to a more simple vector illustration after being used to the 1997 logo for so long.

Van Halen Logo

I tend to gravitate towards the logos of classic rock bands because the designs are often creative and very stylized which makes them all the more interesting to look at.  This logo is for the band Van Halen which was started in 1972 in California.  The logo was seen on the cover of the band debut album but since then has had some changes made to it. At one point the wings on either side of the logo were replaced by rings.  These changes were made when one of the band members left and was replaced by someone else, but the logo was later changed back to its original form.

Metallica Logo

Metallica is a popular heavy metal band that was started in 1981.  While I don't listen to their music I do like their logo.  The M and the A make the logo interesting to look at, plus this is one of the few logos for a band that I have written about, that only uses font for their logo.  The logo was created in the 1980s when the band was first starting out. I don't know who designed the logo though.  In my opinion the logo seemed ahead of its time when it was created in the 80's.  This is because it looks like something you would see nowadays.

Walt Disney LogoWalt Disney Castle Logo

I personally really like the Disney logo.  My only concern is that the smaller font is sitting below a much larger font.  The smaller font doesn't really look like it is being squished by the larger font because it still has plenty of room to breath.  The font for Walt Disney is Based of the signature of Walt Disney and this aspect of the logo is one that I like because it is recognizable no matter where it is.  The font has also remained the same through the years which helps with recognition of the brand.  The blue logo that is pictured above is the logo that I remember most as I grew up in the 90s watching that logo pop up on the screen every time I watched Winnie the Pooh.  The font hasn't changed much over the years but the castle has changed a lot. The castle pictured above was later replaced for a more realistic one.
Warner Bros. LogoWarner Bros. 90th anniversary logo

The Warner Bros company began in 1918 when four brothers started a business in television and film. However, the logo wasn't seen until 1923 and the colored variation wasn't put to use until 1948.  The colored variation shown above is a commemorative logo that was introduced in 2012 for the company's 90th anniversary. The logo uses custom typeface and while there are different variations of the logo it has remained consistent with design and font through the years.  When I was a kid I watched a lot of Looney Tunes so every time I see this logo I imagine Bugs Bunny standing next to it with a carrot in hand.

YouTube Logo

I like the Youtube logo because it is simple but represents its website perfectly.  It is nice that the red box that is used in the logo is the shape of an older, more retro television screen.  Youtube was started in February 2005 but I am unsure as to whether  or  not the founders of Youtube designed the logo or not.  Apparently the logo has undergone a few changes since the website was started in 2005, but it doesn't seem to have effected the recognition of the logo or the website that it represents. The font used for the logo is alternate gothic.

Xerox LogoXerox Logo Evolution Old History

The Xerox company was started in 1906 but at the time was called the "Haloid Photographic company.  Its current name wasn't in use until 1961.  The company manufactures printers and photocopiers.  As you can see by the examples I have given the logo has undergone a lot of changes through the years, which doesn't really help with logo recognition.  Despite this, the company seems to be doing just fine.  I do like the new logo much more that the previous logos because it is much more interesting to look at with the incorporation of a symbol. The placement of the symbol is also pretty good.

Adidas LogoAdidas Logo Old History

This famous European sportswear company has a memorable and recognizable logo that was designed by Adolf "Adi" Dassler.  His brother Rudolf Dassler also assisted in its design.  The logo font is a custom typeface that works very well.  One of the things that makes this logo somewhat unique is that all the font is lowercase.  The logo has evolved but still retains its recognizable features.  The current logo is meant to represent mountains and the goals that want to be reached. The logo is a good example of creative simplicity in design.

Yamaha Logo
Yamaha corporation is a Japanese Conglomerate that was founded in October 1887.  The company manufactures motorcycles, musical instruments, and more.  The logo hasn't changed much since its creation in 1967 which helps with the recognition of the logo.  The symbol has three overlapping tuning forks which create the shape of a Y.  I like the way this logo was put together because the symbol and the font are about the same height and everything is very uniform.  I also like the simple san serif font that was used for the logo.

Linkin Park Logo
Linkin Park is a metal/rap band group that was started in 1996.  I am unfamiliar with this band but I have heard of them, and apparently their music is very popular.  The logo that they use now is part of the art from a successful 2007 album.  I don't know who designed the logo, but I like the symbol and font that is used in the logo.  The symbol has a lot of movement to keep the viewer interested.  I didn't notice this at first but there is an L and P in the symbol.

Adobe LogoAdobe Old Logo EvolutionThe Adobe company was started in 1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke.  John Warnocks wife, Marva, designed the logo, but the logo has been modified to its current version which is red and white.  I do like the new logo more than the old one, but perhaps this is because it is brighter.  While the logos loosely resemble one another, they are still very different from one another. While this may have effected the logos recognition in the eye of the general public it doesn't seem to have effected to popularity of the company itself.

Dolce Gabbana LogoThe Dolce and Gabbana logo, like many of fashion company logos,  is very simple in design.  Composed completely of type, the logo consists of a black san serif font on a white background. The company itself was founded by two Italians in 1985 and the company focuses on clothing and accessories.  I love fashion but sadly I am unfamiliar with this logo, unlike those who purchase products from the company.  It doesn't seem as though the logo has changed since the company was started which has most likely helped with the brands popularity and recognition.

Best Buy LogoBest Buy Logo Old EvolutionIn 1966 Richard M. Schulze started the Best Buy company, only at the time of its beginning the company was called, "The Sound of Music".  The current logo is simplistic and to the point.  Its bright colors make it stand out. While the logo is easy to remember, its design could be improved. The logo is meant to represent a company that sells its products for cheaper than other competitors and while the logo isn't necessarily cheap in design the typography could be improved.  This is one of those cases where the designers put very large font in a very small box.  With little breathing room the font becomes cramped.  The constant change of the logo design may have also effected branding recognition for the company.

John Deere Logo

A company that was founded back in 1839 the company continues to sell its machinery and provide jobs for people worldwide.  I am unsure how many changes the logo has undergone but the most recent logo was designed by Landor Associates in 2000.  Even though the logo may have changed over the years the brand is still very recognizable and alteration to the logo probably hasn't effected the popularity of the company.  While putting the logotype perfectly centered below the logo may not have been the best choice I do like the deer illustration.

Girl Scout Logo

Most people are familiar with Girl Scouts because of there popular cookies, or maybe having once participated in girl scouts themselves. To be honest I knew about Girl Scouts but was unaware that they have a logo. Girl Scouts was started in June 1912 and the logo was designed by Saul Bass in 1978.  The logo was changed slightly in 2010 by the OCD agency but the logo has still remained about the same through the years.  While I find the illustration creative and interesting to look at due to its silhouettes, the placement of illustration and font is unsettling.  This is because the font seems to be sitting on an invisible line but the logo is just floating randomly.  With a different arrangement the design could be better.

DC Logo

DC is a company that was founded in 1993, and focuses on providing shoes, attire, and accessories for snowboarding and skateboarding.  Even though the focus is to manufacture for participants of these sports, the clothing and shoes are worn by skateboarders and non-skaters alike. The brand is extremely recognizable and popular, especially among the younger generation. The company was started by Ken Block and Damon Way but I am unsure as to who designed the logo. While the logo does often change color according to the clothing or shoes that it is put on the shape and logo design has remained consistent and recognizable.

The Fox Racing logo is one of my favorite logos.  It is associated with BMX, motorcross, mountain biking, wakeboarding, and surfing.  The logo is simple and memorable and one of the reasons for its success is most likely how it can be used in so many applications.  I usually see the logo on dirt-bikes or helmets but the company also makes a clothing line as well.  The products are popular with both men and women.  The brand looks great on just about anything and while it is sometimes seen with different colors it has remained consistent through the years.
